Stretching Homopolymers

چکیده
Force induced stretching of polymers is important in a variety of contexts. We have used theory and simulations to describe the response of homopolymers, with N monomers, to force (f) in good and poor solvents. In good solvents and for sufficiently large N we show, in accord with scaling predictions, that the mean extension along the f axis 〈Z〉 ∼ f for small f , and 〈Z〉 ∼ f 2 3 (the Pincus regime) for intermediate values of f . The theoretical predictions for 〈Z〉 as a function of f are in excellent agreement with simulations for N = 100 and 1600. However, even with N = 1600, the expected Pincus regime is not observed due to the the breakdown of the assumptions in the blob picture for finite N . We predict the Pincus scaling in a good solvent will be observed for N & 105. The forcedependent structure factors for a polymer in a poor solvent show that there are a hierarchy of structures, depending on the nature of the solvent. For a weakly hydrophobic polymer, various structures (ideal conformations, self-avoiding chains, globules, and rods) emerge on distinct length scales as f is varied. A strongly hydrophobic polymer remains globular as long as f is less than a critical value fc. Above fc, an abrupt first order transition to a rod-like structure occurs. Our predictions can be tested using single molecule experiments. 1 ar X iv :0 70 5. 30 29 v1 [ co nd -m at .s of t] 2 1 M ay 2 00 7

Stretching of homopolymers and contact order.
Mechanical stretching of self-interacting homopolymers is studied through molecular dynamics simulations in which the polymers are pulled with constant speed. At temperatures below the compactification temperature, the force-extension curves show a plateau that corresponds to the situation in which the polymer adopts "ball-string" configurations. The dependence of rupture distances on contact o...
متن کاملTightening of knots in proteins.
We perform theoretical studies of stretching of 20 proteins with knots within a coarse-grained model. The knot's ends are found to jump to well defined sequential locations that are associated with sharp turns, whereas in homopolymers they diffuse around and eventually slide off. The waiting times of the jumps are increasingly stochastic as the temperature is raised. Knots typically do not retu...

We have analyzed the equilibrium response of chain molecules to stretching. For a homogeneous sequence of monomers, the induced transition from compact globule to extended coil below the θ-temperature is predicted to be sharp. For random sequences, however, the transition may be smoothed by a prevalence of necklace-like structures, in which globular regions and coil regions coexist in a single ...

The phase behavior of strongly segregated AB diblock copolymer and selective C homopolymer blends is examined theoretically using a combination of strong stretching theory (SST) and self-consistent field theory (SCFT). The C-homopolymer is immiscible with the B-blocks but strongly attractive with the A-blocks. The effect of homopolymer content on the order-order phase transitions is analyzed. I...
متن کاملDistinguishing single- and double-stranded nucleic acid molecules using solid-state nanopores.
Solid-state nanopores offer a promising method for rapidly probing the structural properties of biopolymers such as DNA and RNA. We have for the first time translocated RNA molecules through solid-state nanopores, comparing the signatures of translocating double-stranded RNA molecules and of single-stranded homopolymers poly(A), poly(U), poly(C). On the basis of their differential blockade curr...
